What Is ScrumTale?

A Crime Story That Teaches Scrum

ScrumTale is a Scrum simulation game where teams work together to create a crime story. While writing, they naturally practice all key Scrum events - Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives.

The crime story creates emotional engagement and context that makes Scrum concepts stick. It's not roleplay - it's a real creative challenge with real collaboration dynamics.

  • 3 full Sprints in a single session
  • Product Owner, Scrum Master & Dev Team roles
  • Story cards, Event cards & Product Backlog

How It Works

Three Sprints, One Story

Teams experience the full Scrum cycle three times - learning from each iteration.

Sprint Planning
1

Sprint Planning

Teams receive Story Cards with crime story elements. The Product Owner prioritizes the Backlog while the team estimates and commits to a Sprint Goal.

Writing Sprint

The team writes their crime story chapters using Story Cards. Event Cards introduce surprises - just like real projects. Collaboration and adaptation are key.

20-30 min per Sprint
Sprint Review
3

Review & Retro

Teams present their stories (Sprint Review), then reflect on what worked and what didn't (Retrospective). Each Sprint builds on lessons from the last.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ScrumTale before you get started.

How many participants do I need?
ScrumTale works best with 5-17 participants (one or two Scrum teams). The ideal team size is 5-7 people. For larger groups, you run two parallel teams of up to 8-9 each.
How long does a session take?
A full ScrumTale session with 3 Sprints takes 3-6 hours depending on the depth of debrief discussions. The classroom version typically runs 4-6 hours, while the online version is optimized for 3-4 hours. You can also run a shorter 2-Sprint version in about 2-3 hours.
Do participants need prior Scrum knowledge?
No! ScrumTale is designed to teach Scrum from scratch. It works equally well as an introduction for beginners and as a deep-dive refresher for experienced practitioners. The game introduces concepts progressively - each Sprint builds on the previous one.
What do I need for the online version?
Just a modern web browser and a video conferencing tool (Zoom, Teams, Meet). Participants access the ScrumTale platform through a shared link - no downloads or accounts required. You'll receive access credentials and a link to share with participants before the session.
What languages is ScrumTale available in?
ScrumTale is currently available in English, German, Polish, Italian, and Czech. All cards, guides and facilitation materials are fully translated. More languages are being added - contact us if you need a specific language for your team.
What's included in the classroom box?
The classroom edition includes 200+ professionally printed cards (Story Cards, Event Cards, Role Cards, Sprint Cards), a printed Facilitator Guide with step-by-step instructions, timing suggestions, debrief questions, and tips for different group sizes. Everything you need to run the game immediately.
Can I use ScrumTale for commercial training?
Absolutely! The classroom edition is licensed for unlimited commercial use - train as many groups as you want. The online edition is licensed per session. Many Certified Scrum Trainers, Agile coaches, and corporate trainers use ScrumTale as a core part of their paid workshops.
What if I'm not satisfied?
We offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee for the classroom edition. If ScrumTale doesn't work for your training, return it for a full refund. For the online edition, contact us before the session if you need to reschedule or have concerns - we're here to help make your workshop a success.
